Venice, Italy Website: www.wastewater-venice-2011.com Submission of papers: 15 December 2010
Notification of acceptance: 30 January 2011 In Italy more than 9000 municipal wastewater treatment plants have treatment capacity under 2000 population equivalent, and in certain locations the small and decentralized systems are definitely a must. This is the case of the, historic city of Venice where the municipal wastewaters are treated in 140 small biological plants and more than 6000 septic tanks. Venice is therefore a unique venue to bring together researchers, professionals and policy-makers to outline the actual state-of-the-art and the future perspectives of small water and wastewater systems in a place where these topics are successfully applied. Additionally, its historical role in the whole Mediterranean area is well known, therefore, the joint conferences will play an important function in the definition of the Mediterranean and International strategies regarding water policy, giving evidences of the potentialities coming from small and decentralized systems in developed and developing countries.
Finally, the small and decentralized systems are demonstrating to play a leading role in the treatment of strong nitrogenous wastewater, especially where farms and agro-industries are small and spread on sensitive areas. The event will give adequate scientific and technological support for the definition of the decentralization as a strategy to treat the nitrogen rich liquid down-stream, in order to gather a sustainable meeting point between renewable energy production from organic waste and protection/improvement of water bodies. Proposed Themes: For the10th SWWS : · Water resources management/Environmental management systems/Government laws · Sequencing batch and intermittently aerated continuously fed reactors · Decentralized domestic and industrial wastewater collection and treatment systems · Anaerobic biological treatments · Biofilm and granular reactors · Upgrading of small and decentralized wastewater treatment plants · Wastewater reclamation and reuse · Membrane systems and bioreactors · Process monitoring and control in small wastewater treatment plants · Small and decentralized systems for strong nitrogenous wastewater treatment · Sludge management in small systems · Economical aspects of decentralized systems · Case studies For the 4th DEWSIN: · On site waste water systems · On-site bacteriological test of water · Storm water collection and management · Compact aerobic treatment systems · Composting systems for waste management · Village or rural water supply options · Improved Septic systems · Regulative framework for decentralized systems. · Governance for decentralized systems · People’s Participation · International agencies and provision of sanitation. · Ecological sanitation · Village or rural water supply and wastewater options · On-site bacteriological test of water · Case studies ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Water & Industry 2011 IWA Specialist Conference Chemical Industries 1-4 May 2011

Notification of acceptance: 15 Februrary 2011
Submission of full papers: Water and wastewater systems are essential infrastructures for any modern society and key elements for growth and human development. Access to water significantly affects the overall well-being of people through its impact on health, education, and productivity. However, a large proportion of the world population does not have access to safe drinking water and/or adequate sanitation. When available, the water and wastewater systems are increasingly challenged by a growing demand due to populations growth, urbanization, problems related to aging of the existing infrastructure, and the impact of climate change. Advances in nanoscale science and engineering are offering unprecedented opportunities to develop more cost e?ective, energy conservative and environmentally compatible water treatment processes. It is believed that nanotechnology can substantially enhance environmental quality and sustainability by allowing for a green (clean) technology. This conference will bring together leading scientists from very different research fields including water scientists, material scientists and engineers to discuss and push forward the most promising applications but
also to identify potential pitfalls of the emerging technology with respect to the water industry.
